    Good Afternoon-

Just curious as to whether you have volunteers who visit patients in Isolation Rooms? do they take in activity carts, magazines, etc? Thanks so much!

Our volunteers do not enter isolation rooms for any reasons.

Our volunteers are never requested to go in an isolation room, however, if their activity is requested they are given the choice.  If they choose to go in they are gowned up the same as a staff person would be.  We don't even give that choice to a volunteer who might have risk factors.

Volunteers are trained on the identifiers for isolation rooms.  They are not to go into those rooms...there are on a rare occassion where someone has done so.  They are expected to gown up as does staff.  If they did not gown up and realized entry after the fact, they are referred to Infection Control for any questions/concerns.

We do not allow volunteers in isolation rooms, they are educated on the signs and know not to go in those rooms.

We too encourage volunteers not to enter isolation rooms.  On rare occassion exceptions have been made. If something goes in (mags., books, game, etc.) it does not come out, disposal items only.  All volunteers are trained on alerts/signage for isolation rooms and steps to follow if an exception has been made (again very rare).

One more comment---we do have volunteers who go into certain isolation units.  They go through a training session designed by infection control and done by the unit nursing educator.  This year is a good example, we wouldn't have any volunteers to help the staff in the pulmonary unit because the flu has everyone on isolation.  The unit has trained its volunteers.

Of course nothing goes in the room that can't be cleaned or stays.  However with our infotainment system, it is usually to just be a "buddy" and play a game on Wii or something similar.
