What is your policy on processing new adult volunteers?

Do you perform a ppd and drug screening on all volunteers or just clinical (patient care) volunteers?

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks

The state of Ky requires a two-step ppd on all new volunteers.  We do not do drug screens.  We do require proof that the person is immune to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, either because they can show they have been vaccinated or we draw a titer to look for immunity.

At Children's of Alabama, all volunteers get a one step TB test and renewal annually, at our expense.  We also do drug screens and background checks on all volunteers 18 and over.

We have a policy of drug testing of "at will" or "for cause" that would cover the teens.

Background checks on teens won't show anything since it would usually be a juvenile offense and the record sealed by the court.  We do ask the usual question on the application about crime, etc that all employees are asked.

Prospective volunteers at Conway Medical Center are required to complete an application (which mirrors our HR application).  two letters of reference. TB screening (at the hospital expense).  If they are a positive tester for TB an x-ray is done (at the hospital's expense) and a multi state criminal background check.  All volunteers are over the age of 18. Volunteers purchase their own uniform top through volunteer services at the cost of $20 - $23.

At UTMC in Knoxville, we do one step ppd, thereafter annually.  We do drug screens and background checks on all adults. They complete a health assessment form with immunization records, (titer if they don't know if they have had certain shots).  They can then opt to have the shots or sign a declination form.

We just started this summer.  Prior years, a TB test was all that was required annually.
