We are finding that some of the volunteers schedule the plant of the TB testing but are neglectful in returning for the read.  The facility is considering charging employees and volunteers ($15) if a second plant must be done due to the neglegence of the employee or volunteer not completing the process.  Does anyone else run into this issue?

All volunteers are required to take the TB Skin test if they volunteer within the hospital; we have some that do volunteer work in thier homes so they are not given the skin test.

All new volunteers have to take the 2-Step TB Skin Test and then one yearly.

Just a follow up to my original post:

Our Employee Wellness team has removed the requirement for an annual TB stick from ALL non-high-risk personnel.  Instead, we answer a questionnaire about symptoms and file that document.  This includes me and my staff and all volunteers (since none of mine are in potentially exposure situations) as well as many other clerical or administrative staff.

They are still requiring the two-step stick for initial volunteer applicants.

So now, all I have to do is collect an extra piece of paper as part of our annual education requirements and that fulfills the TB requirement as well.

Does anyone ever impose a charge to the volunteer for TB testing?

No, we do not charge for tb tests.  However, we only hold a tb clinic for volunteers every other Wednesday morning for an hour and a half in the morning so we are finding that more and more people are choosing to get at least one of the two test done on their own at their expense.

We also require a 2 step testing prior to beginning to volunteer - regardless of placement.  Currently, we have no ongoing requirements.  We do not charge volunteers for this testing. We also offer the flu shot to all volunteers each year free of charge.

All of our volunteers and staff no matter where they work have to have two TB tests when starting and then one annually.

What about the Hepatitis A and B, pertussis, varicella, rubella, rubeola???

We are examining TJC guidelines which state: When volunteers perform patient care or services the organizations must manage volunteer personnel just as they must manage services and personnel who are proprovided be direct employees.

Employees in patient care must have all of these, provide proof that they have had them or sign declination forms.

We have only given TB tests here; none of these other immunizations.  The volunteer do get free flu shots.

    What about your hospitals?

We do not do TB testing on any of volunteers, they fill out an Initial and therafter an annual Health Questionnaire that Employee Health revies . If they think it is necessary after they reveiw the history form they will contact volunteer(which has not happened that i am aware of). This has been reviewd by Administration, Legal, Compliance staff etc. TJC has said nothing about our practice.
