Do any of you waive the TB requirement for volunteers who have no patient contact, such as those in the gift shop or office assistants?

Our Wellness nurses have begun to drop this requirement for certain staff who do not have regular patient contact and it has raised issue with volunteers.  I'd like to know what others think.  Thanks!

Yes, we do.  Our Musicians in the Lobby have no contact with patients so we do waive their tb tests.  We have not stopped requiring it for clerical volunteers yet....not sure why.

We just reviewed this policy and decided to maintain the requirement for all volunteers because our volunteers frequently change positions within the hospital and we wanted to be sure everyone was covered equally.

All volunteers, from teens to adults to Hospice, get annual TB screening.

We give all of our volunteers annual TB.  At our hospital all employees recieve annual TB, so we follow the same standards.

We still require all new volunteers to have the TB test as a baseline.  After that it depends on what the CDC is suggesting for that year.  The bottom line however is we don't discriminate between patient-contact volunteers or non contact because they do occasionally change positions.

My hospital is now requiring that all new volunteers get 2 tb shots before they start...then 1 annual after that.  Does your hospital require one or 2?

We require a 2-step tb test for all new employees & volunteers, regardless of the job they perform.  After that we follow CDC guidelines, which are reviewed annually.  Currently we are not required to repeat annually, but we have had to do it in the past (only 1 stick).

Yes, we've always required the two-step initial testing and the one annual follow up.  However, with budgets so tight, I think they are looking for ways to ease up if folks are not high risk.

It will just be easier on me to have one single rule for all volunteers.

All volunteers-Mended Hearts, Pet Therapy, Jr. Volunteers and Senior volunteers get tb tests.  We follow same rule as employees.
