Do you use volunteers in mother/baby department and what are they NOT allowed to do? Are they in the nursery and do they bathe the babies?  Thoughts please.

The only thing weuse volunteers for in our Family Birth Center is to assist the newborn photographers. We sponsor them so I like to have a representive from the volunteer department to go around and help the picture taking process.  We do not allow babies to be rocked by volunteers.  Volunteers work the desk letting visitors in and out of patient rooms.  During the summer they use a teen volunteer also.

We utilize "cuddlers" in our nursery.  They are referred by Volunteer services to the departemnt as appropriate; interviewed by the clincal coordinator of our Maternal Child Health.  She makes the volunteer selection.  The volunteers do everything from fold baby laundry to cleaning the bassinets, feed and rock the babies, take the babies to the mom....  Each goes through a minimum of three weeks training with a designated (seasoned) volunteer cuddler until they both feel comfortable in working without immediate supervison.  A competency is done annually by the clinical coordinator.  Shifts are covered morning and afternoon to help the nurses and doc's.
