Please share what your volunteers do in the E.D.  We are meeting next week to clarify what they can and can't do.  The position description we have needs to be agreed upon by all staff as currently there are many inconsistences.  One day the volunteers are allowed to take patients to the treatment rooms or for x-rays etc. and then the next day they are told that they are not allowed to take them.

Thank you for sharing. If you want to attach your description to an email, you may send it to my email: mlbrown@utmck.edu

Our volunteers handle the customer service aspects, specifically they man the arrival desk, logging arrivals/times, handle getting the patient to the Triage area, provide comfort items (tissues, emesis basins....) escort patient families to the ER bay once the patient has cleared triage and been admitted, can push patients in wheelchairs as appropriate.  They do NOT serve as transporters for the ER itself, or do any visiting once the patient has been admitted and taken to the ER itself.
