Are any of you placing retired nurses as volunteers to make follow-up calls to patients that have been discharged.  The request I've gotten is for the volunteer nurses to check on the patient, ask if they got their prescriptions filled, are they taking their meds, have they seen their doctor or have an appointment scheduled, etc.

We do not allow retired nurses to do anything "clinical" nor are any other volunteers allowed to do anything "clinical".  Would discussing med's be considered clinical?  Sometimes it is very hard for the retired RN to pull back and not do what they are accustom to doing as a professional.
