Again, I am looking for advice from the experts.

    We have 2 information/desks and I have volunteer coverage at each from 9:00am - 8:30pm Monday-Friday.

We currently have a task force to review the possibility of coeverage for both desk from 6:00am - 9:00am.  All members of the task force are very much aware and agree that volunteers will not be interested in covering this time period. This period is critical because of patients arriving for tests, surgeries etc.

This is to solicit the following informaton:

Do you staff the Informatio/Reception Desk?

      Time of coverage by volunteers?

Is there coverage prior to volunteers arriving?  If so what time and by whom?

     Your response is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Depending upon your area and local employment patterns, don't be so sure you can't find early morning volunteers.  We currently have 21 volunteers assigned to serve before 8AM.

Most of these volunteers are connected to one day surgery, whether at the information desk/greeter/wayfinder or volunteering in the one-day surgery registration area or in recovery.

At our Ft. Tthomas and Florence Hospitals we staff the Information Desk from 8 A-8 P, in Eddgewood hey have some Surgical aitin gVolunteeers who start as early aas 6 AM. I think it is best to ask yo r current volunteers if anyone might be intereseted in an earliere shift first before you recrit. You ma be surprised.

Our information desks start at 8 am.  However, we do have surgical lounge volunteers that are there to greet at 6 am! They work 6-10, 10-2 and 2-6 pm.  Those early morning volunteers are certainly out there!  We brainstormed one time in a session where the best place was to find early morning people and they came up with Hardees and McDonalds!

Our volunteers staff the information desk from 8:30 am - 8:00 pm.  We have a phone visitors call visible on the counter to request room numbers before 8:30 am and pm.

We have opted to cover this area consistently with an employee, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.  On each of these days, the area is supplemented with volunteers.  We try to always have three people there at all times, including the employee.  If the employee takes time off, then it is not "back-filled" with paid staff, but the volunteers extend their time or take over when needed.

We also have Surgery and GI area volunteers who begin at 6 a.m.  Our greatest need for volunteers are the evening hours (6 to 9 p.m.).  I seem to be able to find ones willing to come in very early, but most do not want to be here later - or after the sun goes down.

    Hope this helps.

What we are doing is a little convoluted.  We staff our main Reception/Information area with volunteers from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM.  Our paid staff works with the volunteers from 6:00AM to 5:00 PM.  After that time the functions split with the volunteer tasks moving to the highest traffic area so assistance is available to visitors, and Information/Admissions provided by paid staff is done through the ER.
