Physical Therapy students as volunteers?

Our PT/OT for in-patients is outsourced through another organization.  Their volunteer coordinator is asking about PT students who need observation hours going through my volunteer process to be able to observe in-patients.  We have not done this before.  Any advice from an acute care facility that might already be doing this?

This group has their own rehab facility on-site so it is a strong relationship and they can do all the out-patients they want.  We've just never authorized in-patient observations. Your thoughts?

We are a physical rehab hospital, so we receive A LOT of inquiries from pre-PT and pre-OT students. Because they do not truly volunteer, they go through an entirely different process (different application, different contact person, limited number of hours, etc.). I actually have a volunteer who is processing all of the paperwork before they are placed with a PT, OT or SLP. It was too muddy when we were trying to treat them the same.

We have both in and out patient PT/OT.  We have volunteers who are pre-therapy students and are committed to our minimum volunteer hour requirement.  The department handles all observation hours.  The department says if it is more than 16 hours it is not observation it is volunteering and they must go through our process.

This has worked well for us.  If they are observing, the department is responsible for HIPPA, etc.

If they are with us for under 20 hours, they are called "shadowing" and just need to sign off on a confidentiality form only and the department takes responsibility for all the rest.  If they need more than 20 hours, they must apply to be a volunteer and go through the regular process for on-boarding for volunteers.

My process is the same at Patty's. Less than 20, just sign a confidentiality agreement.  More than 20, process just like a volunteer.
