When patients have selected to be "confidential" – what is your instruction to the Florist and families?  Do you receive flowers when family members know the room number?   Do you have policy on this topic.

We do not accept flowers for patients that are anm.

If the florist is certain the patient is in that room we suggest they take them up.  We do not confirm in any way that the patient is in the hospital.  We sent a letter to all florist in town explaining this change when HIPAA first came out

Our hospital refers to these patients as "red lined" (individuals who do not want to be identified as being a patient).  We do not accept the flowers.  We tell the florist, "we are unable to accept the flowers because we do not have that patient on our public registry."  This holds true for phone calls and cards as well.

When patients are admitted to the hospital the individual registering the patient is very clear when they choose to be "red lined".  It is explained if someone phones they will not be connected, if flowers are sent they will not be delivered if mail is sent it will be returned to sender. ETC.

We do not deliver any flowers for patients that are not purchased in our gift shop.  The florist must have all the information from the family ordering the flowers before coming to the hospital.  That way if a patient is no longer here, the florist will be responsible for getting further delivery information from the sender.
