Do any of you currently background the vendors coming in and out of our hospitals? We have retained a third party company to do this for us due to Joint Commission standards. What I'm particularly interested in is florists. Do you background check the florists who deliver flowers at your hospital? I'd appreciate knowing what your process is regarding this. Thanks for your help!

We do not, and I have never heard of this.  I am interested to see what kind of responses we get.

We don't either. Just our incoming volunteers.

Our healthsystem uses VCS-Vendor Credentialling Service (www.vcsdatabase.com) for outside vendors that service healthcare equipment or other facility-based machinery or services.  The vendor has to create a profile with VCS who does background checks, medical & security screenings, etc.  We have two kiosks that reps have to swipe an ID when they arrive to get a printed, dated (sticky) name badge to wear while on-site.  The badge denotes different levels of access.

We are no longer able to have vendor sales in our lobby, so I have not asked those vendors to participate in VCS, but suspect I would be expected to do so if we had continued to have sales.

Carla:  Looking back at your question--no we don't screen florists (or pizza delivery, etc.) through VCS but only those who are here on a regular basis.  Delivery personnel are like guests/visitors.

Our hospital has vendor registration kiosks set up in key areas, but the vendors have to have submitted an application and gone through the process.  As far as florists, our florists deliver the flowers to our Flower Desk and the volunteers deliver to the patients, so the florists don't have to go to the floors.

We check vendors since they have access to different areas of the hospital.  Florists deliver to our admissions desk and the person ( primarily staff at a peds hospital) that is the recipient comes and picks it up and signs for it.

What about fundraising vendors?  How does this question apply to them?

Vendor check in is located in two areas of our facility, but, vendors who do the fund raising for CMC have not yet been classified as such to go through this process.  Floral delivery direct from the CMC gift shop is delivered to patient rooms by volunteers.  Those who deliver directly from the store florist to a patient room do not go through such a check - they are treated as visitor/guest.
