We have been asked by nursing to develop a "patient companion" program utilizing volunteers to visit patient rooms in an effort to prevent patient falls.  Do any of you have a program similar to this and be willing to share service descriptions and helpful hints on starting a program?

I dont have such a program but I am aware of a program that does.  Her contact info is Eileen Pelletier <Eepellet@harthosp.org>.  She sent me an email at my request for info:

I have attached the volunteer role description, the rounding tool, and the link to a video we made about the program.

Many other organizations have implemented the program (or tried to).  Based on their feedback I can tell you that two of the most important issues are:

    1. clinical staff oversight and use of the data

    2. pre-education of the unit nursing staff to avoid the feeling that the volunteers are checking up on them vs. the collaborative effort this should be.

If you have any questions please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Eileen

I will send the documents to you via email.
