The subject of volunteers performing wheelchair transport has been addressed on the formum last year, I wonderiing if anything has changed at your hospitals?   Do you allow volunteers to transport guest/patients in wheelchairs?   If so would you share your policies, procedures, training requirements and any other issues involved.   Could everyone please respond with yes or no....I would like to have numbers.

    Thanks,

    Reina

Yes we allow our volunteers to push people in wheelchairs. We have a section in our orientation to train folks on the nuances of wheelchair transportation and then each department is asked to provide hands in training in the department orientation. The only requirement is the volunteer is not permitted to assist the patient or visitor in to or out of the chair.

yes we allow volunteers to transport patients in/out and guests in wheelchairs. The guest requests can get numerous on occasion and they want to go to a room or the cafeteria and keep the chair with them, which they cannot.  We have placed a weight limit as we now have a bariatric program.  Clinical staff is requested to take care of those > 250lbs.  Other restrictions are no IV or pull along O2 units..Guidelines and postion profiles outline the do and don't for the volunteer.

Yes - Our volunteers transport for admissions and discharges.  They are trained hands-on to use the wheelchairs, patient must be able to get into and out of chair on their own. We purchased a motorized wheelchair for bariatric patients which each transport volunteer is trained on.

Yes, our volunteers do transport pts. and visitors in w/c.  Like Jamie we have training at oreination.  Each year at the volunteers evaluation we re-educate and document.  Our volunteers do not lift or transport pts./vistors in and out of w/c.

We also provide discharge and transport for patients & visitors.  Riders must be able to get in and out of the chair on their own power and need no special attachments (leg lifts, IV, oxygen).

Annually we do a procedure and policy check through direct observation (suggested during a mock JC survey) on each volunteer trained in using wheelchairs.  Volunteer mentors train new volunteers in the procedures.

Yes, our volunteers transport patients to the discharge area and would transport any visitor needing assistance.  Patients/visitors must be able to get in & out of the wheelchair on their own, or a staff member must assist them. Training is provided as part of their orientation.

Also in reference to wheelchairs, does anyone use a motorized (battery operated/electric) device that the volunteer steers and does not have to push the chair.  This device would generally be used for the larger patient where the volunteer could be at risk of injury.  I am trying to find out what they are called and who the vendor is that they can be obtained from.

Yes, we allow volunteers to transport visitors and discharge same day surgery/endoscopy patients by wheelchair.  We have a transport team of paid staff to discharge inpatients.  We use an online YouTube video from the Red Cross and also the video from STAXI for our orientation/training of the wheelchairs and how to properly use them. If you need our hospital policy on wheelchair training, we can send to you.
